Bluesphee on a Segway #2

First in the State
Westhaven is the first golf course in the state to offer the Segway GT (golf transporter).   Segway HT (human transporter) has been around since December 2001.   In March 2005, Segway, Inc introduced three new models, one being the Segway GT for golf courses.

GT differences
The new lithium-ion battery, and larger balloon tires, increase the range and capabilities of the original Segway HT.   A side attachment holds the golf bag, and a handlebar attachment allows for a score card holder, and carry-all bag (with cold beverage storage).

Gyro & computer balance
The four gyros and computer keep the rider balanced.   The technology was invented by Dean Kaman, to enhance wheel chairs.   A rider does not need to balance the device, just shift their weight slightly forward, and they effortless glide forward.   With a twist of the turning mechanism, the Segway can turn on a dime.   While the Segway can go in reverse with a slight shift of the hips, going backwards is unncessary with the 360 turning ability.

Glide & Golf
The computer programming on the Segway GT is slightly different from the original HT.   The GT is placed in standby mode, so the golfer can play his game, and then resume gliding by leveling the platform and stepping on.   The HT computer will shut the unit off after a time in standby mode.   The GT is also different in how the operator "parks" the unit.   The GT leans back towards the golfer, while the HT uses a retractable kickstand to remain level when not in use.

Test Glide
The Segway GT is simple to learn and use.   Most users pick up the basics in five to ten minutes.   The training / test glide requires a half hour, and gives the user a thorough understanding of the operation, and capabilities of the Segway GT.   The test glide demonstrates how to get on with a level platform, and set the computer to "green happy face" mode.   After a brief period of the user and the computer attempting to offset each other, the user learns to let the computer take over, and balance the Segway.   The test glide continues with forward and reverse, practicing stopping, and going forward and in reverse.   After mastering forward and reverse the user learns to dismount, and place the Segway in standby mode.   Turning comes next, and a figure 8 course needs to be negotiated, with the user demonstrating smooth and easy turns.   Lastly, negotiating inclines is demonstrated, both inclines straight up and back, and then riding sideways.   The last section covering inclines demonstrates the Segway's ability to go up and down slight rises (15-25 degrees).

A few requirements
A reservation is required for the test glide.   Please allow at least thirty minutes to complete the test glide.   A valid drivers license, and credit card are needed to rent the Segway GT.   There is an age limit of 16 or older, with a minimum weight of 100 pounds, and maximum suggested weight of 260, including bag.   The Segway will carry more, perhaps as high as 350, but inclines become more of a problem.   A helmet is offered with the test glide, and a waiver needs to be signed.  Take your test glide before your game, or a few days before...

New requirements for 2007
The weight limit will be enforced.  Overweight bags will not be allowed, equipment may be moved to a lightweight canvas carrying bag, or rental refused.  Renters will be liable for damage caused to units, $150 for bent/broken bag holder due to excessive bag weight.  $250 for steering column breaks or cracks, due to improper mounting and not checking green ready light.

Segway recall letter Sept 14, 2006
Westhaven Golf Club received the updated software, Saturday September 16, 2006. A Segway representative arrived to install the simple upgrade, and review the vehicle logs. Only six incidents (worldwide from 23,500 units) have been observed after extensive testing of the new x2 model. No incidents have been reported at Westhaven. The review was conducted after x2 model demonstrated the potential problem. The database was reviewed and the six incidents were identified.
